Rationale:

The course is designed to lead students to a research perspective so that they may effectively study Afrocentric problems and arrive at sensible solutions.  The intent of the course is to make students critical consumers of historical, anthropological, and linguistic research literature and produce researchers capable of analyzing social science problems.  

Expected Student Outcomes/Course Objectives:

Demonstrate the ability to use professionally acceptable techniques in analyzing and critiquing (Afrocentric & Eurocentric and ) historical, anthropological, and linguistic research and scholarship.

Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • Appraise the quality and utility of the literature of historical, and anthropological, and to a limited extent linguistic research
  • Distinguish among selected research designs intended to provide answers to appropriate research problems.
  • Demonstrate the ability to independently explore areas of professional interest.
  • Explain the function and typical characteristics of instruments utilized in historical, and anthropological research.
  • Demonstrate the ability to frame problems, search for and evaluate relevant information using the latest technology for data retrieval.
  • Using stated research questions develop/propose and be able to defend appropriate research methods and procedures for data collection and analysis.
  • Explain the different validity and reliability issues that may arise in different types of approaches (i.e., experimental, quasi-experimental, descriptive, qualitative, or mixed qualitative).
  • Explain the purpose, suitability, and /or utility of various quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methodologies.
  • Interpret the characteristics and uses of descriptive and inferential analysis techniques, and have experience in appropriate statistical procedures.
  • Be able to determine and address the ethical issues for a research proposal that includes human subjects. 

Research Methods.    Students will explore the major research methods used to conduct Afrocentric research including, linguistic, anthropological, and historical research methods. Provides students with a working knowledge of the literature and mechanisms of research, i.e., problem formulation, research design, data collection, data analysis, and interpretation. Students will develop research problems and select methods to study those problems and select methods to study those problems in the form of research proposals.

  • Are you interested in knowing more about the origin of Black/African people and their ancient history? If the answer is YES, you may be interested in taking an Afrocentric course at home. The Afrocentric study course is designed to help people become aware of the Afrocentric historical and linguistic experience.
  • These Distance courses will make students aware of the pluridisplinary approach to Afrocentric studies used by C.A. Diop and J.A. Rogers.

The Afrocentric independent studies courses can be taken at any time during the year. Each course lasts between 6 and 15 weeks depending on the number of readings necessary for understanding specific historical experiences.

This Afrocentric studies program is not a part of any University. These courses are offered on a private basis by Dr. Clyde Winters. NO Grades will be given.

The sole purpose of this learning program is to teach aspects of Afrocentric studies to the interested public. Work completed in this program of study can not be transferred toward a university degree. But you can earn a Certificate of Participation.

The student will be provided with 1) selected articles and readings associated with the course; 2) lectures will be provided via e-mail. Students will be responsible for purchasing the text used in the course. Other Reading material for each course will be supplied electronically.

The student may complete a mid-term and final Questionnaire to determine his/her comprehension of the course matter. This questionnaire will be returned to the instructor via email. The student will email the instructor

The instructor will reply to such questions via email. Satisfactory completion of the 6th, 9th, or 15th-week comprehensive questionnaire leads to the award of the Certificate of Participation. If you are a teacher you can be awarded C.P.D.U.s that can be used toward State Recertification.
